Haiku I hate the governor of Oregon Friday

Dumb Kulongoski
whatever are you thinking?!
teachers work for free?

what is he thinking?!
i already work for free....
paid for 8 hours

work for 10 or more
daily....plus i take some home
work on weekend too.

serious face slap
no one works for free....except....
VOLUNTEERS. I'm done.

Ok people. I am seriously upset by this. Then to read some of the ignorant comments that were made. Comments like, "yeah...teachers SHOULD work for free. they get paid for a year but only work part of it."

Let me tell you people. I WORK HARD. VERY VERY HARD. I'm exhausted when I finally get to go home. I am offended that people are still touting that "teaching is easy". I'm under constant scrutiny as well. All I do is open to the public's opinion. I fight daily for what is best for kids and work my tail off.

In what other profession do people spend money out of their own pockets? I seriously have thousands of dollars invested in my library. A library that students use daily. I buy school supplies so students that don't have them can have what the others have. I spend my summer break scouting super school supply sales. I spend my gas to get to them. And my time.

I'm mad and want to say more, but I need to go do some planning for tomorrow. I want my students to fully enjoy the 100th Day of School. Oh I'm just so annoyed right now. I love my job and just get sick of defending the fact that I have a right to get paid and not feel guilty about the vacation time I have.

p.s. go hug a teacher today or send a gift. NOT A MUG! hint: teachers LOVE gift cards and this teacher LOVES COFFEE!

I feel ya...I am so livid right now about this. TOTAL slap in the face. ESPECIALLY when we are being told we have to do all this other "stuff", or how we aren't doing enough...so take away our pay??

ummmm, yeah....do people have any idea how much other "stuff" we're required to do ON TOP OF planning for our daily lessons? seriously.

I've just run out of adequate words for this whole issue. I am fed up. With all of it.

Yeah, there are some people who should be asked to work for free. Like the ones making MILLION DOLLAR BONUSES. Does that in any way, shape or form describe teachers? I think not. I don't blame you for being angry.

What is wrong with your governor?!

When my lawyer charges $250/hour and my portion of a visit to the doctor makes me cringe, I can't help but think that there is something completely wrong with our country. Teachers should be paid MORE.

Hang in there.

This stinks! I hate that teachers are so under appreciated. If you actually did the work that they just paid you for the public would have a rude awakening of what all teacher's do. I know my SIL, who loves her job and her students, works her tail off. Every holiday get together she has her bag of stuff, in the summer she is researching things and buying stuff. She finally gave up on having the kids bring in supplies, she just buys them all herself (she works in an inner city school) My hat is off to you, her and all the other teachers everywhere!

P.S. came here thru Haiku Friday link!

Yeah, Ohio's governor is suggesting that Ohio schools extend their year by 20 days (read: an extra month of work for teachers) without a similar pay raise for school employees. And I read that article. Five percent of a governor's salary is not as much of a hardship as five percent of a teacher's salary.

I teach preschool; my sister and my husband are both student teaching this semester and are holding out hope that they'll each have a job next school year. My mom is a retired teacher, but is still on part-time. But since she's not under contract, her school is not required to keep her on for next year.

Tough times all around. Good luck.

The world has gone tipsy, somehow. It's about politics instead of people.

Why is it the overpaid are the ones to decide who works for free?

Why is it that someone can do a bad job only to not be reelected, yet go back to the "private sector" richer or with the ability to become richer through speaking or lobbying?

Why is it that these people do not get better as the years ramble on?

I don't get it............
